A company is being sued over one of their products that is designed to prevent blood clots. The product is Xarelto. In Germany there have been several lawsuits filed against this company and there are more than 10 in the U.S.
One of the company’s representatives reports that the safety of the drug has been consistent with results from clinical studies involving more than 75,000 participants since 2011.
Xarelto has been a big seller earning the company $1.3 billion dollars last year. The company’s CEO believes that earnings could reach $3.5 billion. This drug could also be used for use with acute coronary syndrome (ACU). The company is seeking approval for this to happen as there are many who suffer from ACU. However, the FDA has denied approval for this three times.
While Xarelto is still being prescribed and purchased, many are experiencing side effects and this number is growing. Germany reports that during 8 months of 2013 968 side-effect reports were made which was 218 more reports from 2012. Also in 2013 72 of the reports resulted in death and in 2011 58 of those reports resulted in death.
There is a similar drug, Pradaxa, approved prior to Xarelto. This drug has also garnered several lawsuits in the United States due to side effects people are experiencing. The makers of Pradaxa recently agreed to pay $650 million to settle approximately 4,000 lawsuits. Due to the amount of reports on Pradaxa the FDA had to take further action and investigate the drug further. The FDA concluded that Pradaxa was safer than Warfarin, most of the time. They report that with new uses Pradaxa indicates a lower risk of strokes due to blood-clots, bleeding in the brain and fatalities than Warfarin. They also reported that there is a higher risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. It was also reported that the risk of heart attack was the same with the two drugs.
